Since my departure of DA, I've taken up an old hobby of comic writing. This means that I've bought a website called Dollarninjas.com
and attempted to make a webcomic out of it. As the writer, I'm the one who sketches out scripts and hands them to an artist.
I know what this means. You don't like me. I don't like you. We have an understanding.
Still, my dedication to making the site incredible even though bouts of no-artist inactivity has endured. Its been understandably difficult to find a regular cartoonist and even when I do have one the updates aren't as regular as I'd like them to be. I've been pushing nose-first against the grindstone and it hasn't been working for me, so I've decided to explore some other ideas. Maybe I can have both a regular cartoonist, and still have a way to offer more then just method of entertainment?
The best way to go about this is clearly through some very loaded questions. As an artist, what do you want from me?
For you to be my artist-for-a-day on the site. Or maybe a few days? I'll check out your stuff, write a script that's funny and generally caters to your art style, and publish your work on the site. Essentially, I'm checking out the idea of making the strip a conglomeration of artists and guest features rather then a one-two team like most websites. It'd be a cool way to go about it.Do I have to be really talented?
Did you see the site? I'm not even that big on a person coloring. The text has to be legible and the art has to be recognizable, but even ink on notebook paper will work for me if the joke goes unharmed. Are YOU any talented? Here is some of my drawn comic scripts
and here is some of my undrawn comic scripts.
That should be enough to make your own judgement.Awesome! So do I get paid for this?
Check the advertising. On average, I make two cents per day on this site. Sure, I'd absolutely love to offer some monetary compensation for this sorta thing but I just don't have the cash flow for it. You're always welcome to do one or two now to get the place going, then come back should the place grow to be a bit more successful.
Until then, I can always offer a reference link and attach your name to it. No worries. I'm not gonna run off with your work and sell it on t-shirts. If you wanna talk copyright, we can do it elsewhere. Why are you so damned good looking?
I'm flattered, but focus. Are you going to give me just old stuff or are you actually going to write something that special?
A really good question, actually. I'm going to write something special. For instance, if you draw in only black and white I'm not going to do a joke about snow. If you're very detailed, I might expand into a more visually focused joke. Trust me when I say that I know what makes a good comic. I may not hit 100% of the time but I think my batting average is good enough.
In some instances, I might go for digging out a really old idea and hand it to you only because I've gone through my head and said "oh this person HAS to draw THIS!" Its more of a complement then laziness. What if I have my own idea for a comic?
Pitch it, and it might be acceptable if it fits in. I prefer the way stated above, but if its funny, its funny.I have some other idea for the site that'd make it great!
Again, pitch it! I want dollarninjas to be a good place for humor and right now I'm expanding into the idea of letting a large handful of people contribute to it. How come this offer hasn't been posted up on the site yet?
It will be. The site needs a bit of work in the first place and so I figured I'd get that all out at one time and create the draft for the offer here in DeviantArt. This place here is a great avenue for pitching ideas to bored doodlers-turned-artists and you guys are my target audience right now.
I'll also be spreading this around in different places as per the old saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket." My DA journal was just the best place to post up a first call, I think.Sold! How do I contact you?
Awesome! firstname.lastname@example.org. I can answer questions there, or you can call me stupid. Either/or works for me.
